Q. Am I allowed to install a script that sends mail?

A. You are, but it cannot send mail as "nobody"; it must send as your username. It also cannot use the mail port directly, but must go through Sendmail. You are also responsible if someone hacks your site and sends out mail with it. Moreover, we monitor the installation of such scripts and all mass mailings from the box.

Category: eMail Secondary Category: Scripts

Q. Am I allowed to install scripts other than those you have available with your installers.

A. You are, but they are your responsibility.

A. Yes, you can work with these them from your control panel.

Category: Mime

Q. Are there any advantages to getting a domain name directly with the registry instead of paying less to register through you?

A. Only to them, because they charge more. We are top-level resellers (wholesalers), and can offer some of the best prices available because we get better prices from the registrar.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Registrar

Q. Are there any extra costs involved in hosting a secure site?

A. Yes, you'll need to buy a digital certificate from a certificate authority.

Category: Security Secondary Category: Certificate

Q. Are your servers monitored?

A. Yes, we monitor them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Category: Site Secondary Category: Monitor

Q. Can I change the user name that is listed on my hosting account?

A. Yes. Just ask, though not too often.

A. Yes. You can find out if the domain name you want is available using the domain page on our main menu. Or, when you complete our online hosting form, you can enter your domain choice(s) in the order form and we will check if the domain name you have chosen is available. This latter option requires manual intervention on our part and costs a few dollars more.

Q. Can I create my site in my word processor and choose "save as html" or "save to web"?

A. This might work, but we very strongly discourage it. This is the worst possible way to create a web site. Word processors save terrible code, and it may only work in one browser.

Category: Site Secondary Category: Creation

Q. Can I do secure business with credit cards on my site?

A. Yes, but there is some extra cost. You will need to purchase a dedicated IP number for your account and obtain a security certificate. Category: Security Secondary Category: Certificate    Contact us

Q. Can I get a shell account with my solution?

A. Long time customers or those with specific security requirements may get what is called a JailShell, but not a full shell.

A. Yes, if you can justify it, perhaps because you wish to have a SSL Certificate and access to your site using https:// for taking credit cards. This can take a few days to arrange and there is an extra cost.

Category: IP Secondary Category: Static

Q. Can I get more disk space, say, instead of extra bandwidth?

A. Upgrade paths are only samples. We are prepared to negotiate a custom plan to suit you. Just contact us. Oh, and we do review space limitations from time to time and increase them free of charge. Perhaps your request will result in just such a change.

Category: Account Secondary Category: Disk Space    Contact us

Q. Can I have additional domains pointing to the same main page as my main domain?

Category: Hosting Secondary Category: Pointers    more

Q. Can I host a porn site with you?

A. No. We do not permit pornography of any type on our servers. Such abuse will result in suspension or cancellation of your account without refund.

Category: Site Secondary Category: Adult    more

Q. Can I keep my domain name when I change a host?

A. Normally, yes (and certainly if you decide to transfer away from us to another host--after all, you may well be back!) We recommend that you register your domain name with a separate registrar before getting a hosting plan (why we use two companies for the two purposes). Then, when you need to move to another host, you just need to buy the hosting, insert your files at the new host, point your domain's name servers to its nameservers, and you're done. If your old host registered the domain for you, check first to see if it was indeed registered in your name. If not, you'll need his or her permission to transfer it and re-register it in your name. This can get very sticky with fly-by-night hosts, but we will never hold your domain name hostage.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Portability    more

Q. Can I manipulate mime types with FrontPage?

A. This feature is not available for FrontPage users.

Category: Mime Secondary Category: FrontPage

Q. Can I offer cPanel to my clients?

A. Yes. Accounts you create from WHM automatically have a cPanel control panel of their own.

Category: Reseller Secondary Category: cPanel

Q. Can I reduce the amount of data transfer my site needs?

A. Usually yes. Try to optimize all the graphics on your site. Many GIFs don't look noticeably worse with fewer colors. Don't duplicate graphics files, let the browser cache them. Try to clean up your html by using relative paths, short filenames, fewer extras, and reducing the number of spaces and new lines.

Category: Account Secondary Category: Bandwidth

Q. Can I register a domain name if I am not ready to sign up for hosting yet?

A. By all means register your domain name as soon as you know what you want, then go off and develop your site using that name. You can set up a hosting account later. Don't pay for services you aren't using.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Registration    more

Q. Can I register a domain with you, but have the domain point somewhere other than your server?

A. Yes. We run registration and hosting independently, so you have full control of what services you buy at all times.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Pointer

Q. Can I register additional domains to point to a subdirectory within my main domain?

A. Your registrar (including us) will allow this as domain forwarding. No problem. Just don't use frame-based forwarding, as search engines won't be able to index your site.

Category: Hosting Secondary Category: Pointers

A. Case is ignored in a domain name. Thus, MyBusiness.com is identical to mybusiness.com and may be easier to read.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Validity

Q. Can I subdivide my space and resell it even if I am not a reseller?

A. Yes, we do allow you to create subdirectories which you can use to offer friends or clients space as long as its within our policy guidelines. Q. Do I need to pay attention to my domain registration's expiration date and ensure it is kept current?

A. Yes. It is your responsibility to verify that the registration of your domain name is complete. And, when the domain name registration comes up for renewal, good registrars (including our sister companies) will eMail the registered contact on your domain to remind that contact it will soon expire. Category: FTP Secondary Category: Anonymous

Q. Do you allow the use of FrontPage?

A. Yes, we support the FrontPage server extensions and the ability for you to publish and maintain your site using FrontPage. However, we do not recommend this method. Category: FrontPage Secondary Category: Support

Q. Do you backup my site?

A. All server data is backed up daily, weekly, and monthly. We will try, but we do not guarantee we can restore your site. You have to take responsibility for maintaining the original of your site on your own computer and backing it up yourself, like everybody else. We are not your mother.

Category: FrontPage

Q. Do you recommend the use of online templates and other automatic web page generation tools to create web sites?

A. Templates and on-line site generators may be adequate for small sites and for beginners. We provide both but neither use them ourselves, support them or recommend them. Purchased templates should be portable, and may work reasonably well, if you don't mind that many other people may have an almost identical site.

Category: Site Secondary Category: Creation

A. We do not support Microsoft ASP scripts on our servers. However, we do support scripts written in PHP. PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is well suited for Web development and can be simply embedded into html. It is open source software, and works well with MySQL, a high-quality DBMS for small to mid-sized databases. PHP offers advantages that add value to our clients' websites without the higher development costs of ASP, while supporting our concern for performance, server security, the security of our other customers and the security of your own site.

Category: Scripts Secondary Category: ASP

Q. Do you support mySQL?

Category: Hosting Secondary Category: Domains

Q. Do you suspend my account if I exceed my bandwidth limit for the month.

A. This is done automatically by the server software, yes. However, if it appears that this is caused by a routine traffic increase, and not by some illicit site use, we will immediately re-enable your account. If you exceed your limit for more than one month you should upgrade.

Category: Hosting Secondary Category: Domains

Q. Help. I made a spelling mistake and registered the wrong domain name. Can you fix this?

A. Sorry, registration and re-registration fees are non-refundable. If we make a mistake, we have to swallow the cost. If you make it, you do.

Category: ControlPanel Secondary Category: Password    Contact us

Q. How can I change my account's contact Information?

A. There is a link on your control panel for this. Depending on the skin, it is usually near the top.

Category: Hosting Secondary Category: Contact Info

Q. How can I create a backup?

A. This option in your control panel allows you to compress your directories and/or files located in your account. This is an excellent way to backup your own files. It will serve as double protection should anything ever go wrong with our backups. It can also serve as the means of transferring your site to another provider in the event that you become dissatisfied with us.

Category: Site Secondary Category: Backup    more

A. This is done from your control panel under the SQL area. Don't forgot to add a user.

A. The control panel allows you to use phpMyAdmin to edit mySQL tables through the use of SQL query language.

Category: mySQL Secondary Category: edit Table

Q. How can I manage my database via the web?

A. This feature provides you with valuable information regarding visitors to your site using your choice of several static program interfaces.

Category: Statistics Secondary Category: View

Q. How can other hosts make money when they offer higher transfer limits for lower prices than you do?

A. They really don't have that many resources to sell, but count on the fact that the majority of sites won't use anywhere close to the full amount of transfer available. This overselling is usually a valid assumption and it is done in many other businesses (e.g.. Airlines overbooking flights). However, we do NOT follow this practice. Instead, all our customers are always guaranteed the full resources contracted, regardless of what other customers are doing.

Category: Account Secondary Category: Bandwidth

Q. How do I access my own control panel?

Your domain name will be one of the ways people recognize or evaluate their choices of sites for their interests when they are using search engines. When facing a large number of choices, the snappiest domain sometimes grabs the most attention.

Q. How do I use FormMail?

A. FormMail-clone is clone of Matt Wright's FormMail.cgi under a less restrictive license. Q. How do I use PHP to connect to MySQL?

A. To merely display the information in your database without the use of a form to call a PHP script you simply create your html document as you would any other web page but instead of the extension of .htm or .html you need to name the file with the extension .php. Then within the document itself the section that you'd like to be the PHP code, begins with We can't teach you how to write PHP in a short answer, however. Read a good book on the subject.

Q. How do manage files on my site?

A. You can use FTP, or any web site editor that employs FTP. The File Manager Option in your Control Panel is also very powerful. It handles many of the functions that FTP does from within your browser. Functions include setting permissions, uploading files from your hard drive, creating and editing html files, and creating subdirectories. DO NOT DELETE OR RENAME any files that the system creates. Also remember, any files that you want available on the World Wide Web must be placed within your public_html folder.

Q. How many accounts can I create with a reseller account?

A. Some low-end reseller accounts limit the number of accounts you can create. The higher end ones do not. In those cases, it depends on your space, packages and bandwidth. Assume that you have a 10GB reseller account, then you may create up to 10 accounts if all of your accounts have been made with a 1GB package.

Category: Account Secondary Category: Bandwidth

e.g. With an average page size of 50 KB, and around 2000 page views per day, you will transfer an average of 3 GB per month. In this case, you should get a plan with 4 to 5 GB of data transfer limit per month, so you don't have to worry about overstepping your account's limit.

Q. How much does extra storage space cost?

A. Take a look at our site and check the cost of the next plan higher than yours.

Category: Account Secondary Category: Disk Space    more

Q. How much does it cost for you to host my web site?

A. This depends on how large a site you have and how much monthly traffic it will generate. The larger these numbers, the greater the cost, as we pay for the resources in the same way. Check our website for the various plans. If you are a beginner, start with the lowest plan. Don't pay for resources you won't use.

Category: Account Secondary Category: Bandwidth    more

Q. How much does it cost to transfer my domain?

A. Transfers cost the same as an initial purchase, and include another year of registration. This means that any remaining time you have left on your current registration will be transferred and one year will be added to your current expiry date. Avoid any registrar that charges an extra "transfer" fee.

A. We have multiple connections to the Internet at our data centre. We have battery backups as well as on site generated electricity if necessary. We continually monitor the functioning of your site from multiple nodes on the Internet. We aim for your site to be up 98.5% of the time or better.

Category: Hosting Secondary Category: Uptime

Q. How secure is e-business conducted on your server?

A. We ensure that data sent from your viewer's Internet browser will make it to our servers safely. All cPanel, Webmail, and WHM traffic is encrypted. If someone should intercept the data in-between your browser and our server, it will be encrypted and they won't be able to do anything with it. We conduct monetary transactions off site with reliable and secure third party stores and order fulfillment sites whose staff have years of experience at securing their sites.

Category: Security

Q. How secure is my web site?

A. You should use the secure protocols in FTP and eMail. This will ensure that your data stream is encrypted and no one can intercept it. You should also not use a dictionary word in your password.

Category: Security

Q. How secure is your web server

A. We employ standard methods of safeguarding against any malicious entry to a website on our server. This is done through the usernames and passwords that are assigned to each of our clients. You need to change your password on first using your control panel, and once in a while thereafter, always to something hard to guess (which means among other things, that it does not contain any words that appear in a dictionary.)

Category: Security

Q. How will I be able to tell if my desired domain name is already taken?

A. Before registering a domain name you first have to do a "whois" search to see if your requested domain name is available. If the domain search request returns without a match, you will be able to register that domain name.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Registration

Q. I already have a web site at www.yourdomain.com/~me. Can I point my domain at it?

A. Any registrar can do this. It is called URL Forwarding and you can set it up yourself at your domain registration service.

Q. I am getting the error "Front Page Extensions not Installed" even though they are. What do I do?

A. We sometimes see this error even when the extensions have been installed because the extensions are easily corrupted. Please reinstall the FrontPage extensions from your control panel.

Category: FrontPage Secondary Category: Error

Q. I can't reach either my site or any of yours. What do I do?

A. It is unlikely the server is down--this almost never happens. Usually this problem is caused by network difficulties between you and the server and it will go away shortly. If it persists, use the alternate eMail address we provided you in the welcome message to contact us.

Category: Hosting Secondary Category: Down

Q. I can't send eMail via your server. What's wrong?

A. Our mail servers are configured securely. This means that you cannot simply reference "mail.yourdomain.com" as an outgoing mail server unless you successfully log in via one of your pop accounts at "mail.yourdomain.com' before you try to send. This is called "check before send", a setting to prevent spammers from using our mail servers as havens for unsolicited eMail. If you are getting a "relaying prohibited" or "disconnected by administrator" error, it means that you haven't logged into the pop3 server at your domain before you tried to send through the SMTP server at your domain. To log in, you need to check for mail first.

Category: eMail Secondary Category: Send

Q. I changed my control panel password and now I can't get in. What do I do?

A. Passwords are case sensitive and are limited to 8 characters. If you entered a password longer than 8 characters try entering the first 8 characters when logging into your control panel. If you still cannot access your account contact us. If one of your users cannot access their mail, you can change their password yourself from your control panel.

Q. I changed my mind about the domain name that I registered. Is it too late to change it?

A. Once you register a domain name, you cannot "un-register" it. If you find that the domain name you chose no longer suits your business or personal needs, you should register another domain name. The domain name you originally registered will continue to be registered to you until the end of the registration period. Registration and re-registration fees are non-refundable.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Registration

Q. I changed my name servers with my registrar, but I can't see my site. Why?

A. DNS changes take 24 to 72 hours to be visible from the rest of internet. You can upload your site to our server using the server name and your user name, per your welcome message and our documentation page, then and wait for a DNS update.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Nameservers

Q. I check my eMail every day, but it's now over quota! Why?

A. If you don't delete your eMails from your mail-box they will remain, and eventually fill it, so no other eMail can be stored and incoming mail will be rejected. You may delete them from either webmail system or by using your POP client. Most POP clients have a setting "leave mail on server for ___days." Fill in a reasonable value, and after that number of days, old mail will be automatically deleted.

Category: eMail Secondary Category: Quota

Q. I don't have any experience in creating a site. Can you help me create my site?

A. We don't design any sites other than our own. You will need to use a web creation program yourself, a ready-made template, or hire a designer.

Category: Site Secondary Category: Creation

Q. I don't need many other resources, but I need quite a bit of disk space. Do you have large block plans.

A. We do have large block plans. Check them out under our list of plans. We will also customize a plan for you if you wish.

Q. I get an error 500 internal server error when trying to view my FrontPage generated site. What do I do?

A. You may have to use your control panel to disable and re-enable FP extensions.

Category: FrontPage Secondary Category: Error

Notes: You cannot mix access methods. If you use FP, you cannot also use FTP to load files.

Q. I got a letter in the mail asking me to renew my domain name. Should I do this?

A. Take a close look at that letter. It's not from one of our subsidiaries, but from someone else. We don't use paper mail for renewals. It may look like an invoice, but itís a clever solicitation to get you to switch registrars for a much higher price.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Renew

Q. I have been notified that my account has been set up but my site is still not active.

A. It generally takes 24-72 hours for domain names to become active. This is just how the Internet works; there is no way we can speed up the process. If you have received a notification e-mail and it's been over 72 hours, it means you did not point your domain name to the right host. Check. Then contact us.

Q. I have just created a new mail box in cPanel. How can I check and use my mail?

A. You may check your mail using the eMail address and password you set up on your control panel either with a "POP" mail program, or on-line using webmail at http://www.mydomain.com/webmail. You may also use one of our login boxes to access webmail. Pay close attention to what your control panel eMail subpanel says is the correct username for the account.

Q. I published my files with FP or FTP, but my web site's not there. Why not?

A. Did you take care to delete the placeholder index file and replace it? Did you point the domain nameservers to our server? If both are "yes" and it has been over 72 hours since the site was set up by us, contact us, and we'll straighten things out.

Q. I want to get started right away, but my domain name hasn't gone live in the registry.

A. FTP or HTTP to your site's special address that we gave you in your welcome letter documentation ("serverName.com/~username") and sign on with your username and password. Be sure the FTP client is pointing into www (or public_html, which is the same folder).

Q. I wish to access to my site using https:// how can I do that?

A. You need a unique or static IP address which you may order from us. They will provide a key to you, you must forward it to us and we will install it on your account. Alternately, we can do all this for you. Contact us for a quote. Q. If I have a choice between installing a script through cPanel and the same one by Fantastico, which one should I use?

Category: CGI Secondary Category: Error

Q. My FrontPage site generates the error "Root Web Busy". How can I fix this?

A. Use the file manager in your control panel to remove the "service.lck" file in the folder /www/_vti_pvt. This is left behind when an FP session is interrupted before completion.

Category: FrontPage Secondary Category: Error

Q. My JavaScript doesn't function when I check my site, but other people say it's O.K. What's up?

A. Make sure JavaScript is enabled in your browser. This is not a server issue.

Category: Languages Secondary Category: JavaScript

Q. My site is database-driven and uses 50 GB per month in transfer. Can I simply use a host with an unlimited transfer plan for $10 per month?

A. It won't work. Hosts are in business to make money and would lose money hosting your site. They have to pay for transfer to upstream providers themselves. Almost all hosts that have "unlimited" plans specify in their acceptable use policies that no site can use an "excessive" amount of resources. If you use too much disk space, bandwidth, or CPU time, these "unlimited" hosts will ask you to upgrade or leave. We don't engage in such deceptive marketing practices. If you buy a plan from us, you'll pay a fair price and be able to use all the bandwidth you contracted for.

Category: Hosting Secondary Category: Databases

Q. None of the engines are indexing my site, why?

A. You may not have allowed enough time for the engine to index your site. The indexing time for most engines is between two days and six weeks, if they are operating normally. If you use frames on your pages, some engines cannot index through the frame to the site. Some engines will not index pages from free sites. If an engine suspects any type of spamming they will may not index your page or may ban your site entirely. If your website is hosted on a server containing illegal adult content, and that site is on the black list of Google your website could be banned.

Q. Once I have a domain name secured, how long may I use it?

A. If there are no trademark disputes, your domain name will be yours for as long as you maintain the yearly registration fees. The longest you can have it reserved at any one time is ten years out.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Term

Q. One of my clients asked me about SSL (Secure Certificate). How can I do that?

A. First your client needs a Unique IP Address. You may buy this from us and we will put it on your client's account, Then he/she needs a Secure Certificate. There are many secure certificate providers. You need to create a CSR key for the client that you provide to the certificate retailer at purchase time. Create it using your reseller control panel. After purchase, the certificate retailer will provide a Secure Key to you or your customer and then you may install it on his/her account. Following this, anyone can access to the site using https://

Category: Reseller Secondary Category: SSL

Notes: There is different between SSL for domain.com and, say, for www.domain.com, For better service and support create a subdomain for the user and order the SSL for that specific subdomain. Usually "secure" is a good idea. So the secure site would be https://secure.domain.com. If all this is too much for you to handle, contact us and we will do the work for a reasonable fee plus certificate costs.    Contact us

Q. Should I buy hosting on a Unix (Linux, SunOS, BSD, etc.) or Windows NT (Windows 2000) based server?

A. We use only Linux or BSD Unix servers. If for some reason you specifically need ASP extensions (and so a Microsoft server), you'll have to find another vendor. No we will not reconsider.

Category: Hosting Secondary Category: Server

Q. Should I go with a big or small hosting company?

A. Large companies might be have a better chance of staying in business and may be able to negotiate better deals for their customers, but small hosts are usually cheaper and provide more personal support. We've been in business a long time.

Category: Account Secondary Category: Contract

Q. Should I simply choose a cheapest plan?

A. We wouldn't recommend choosing any plan below $3 per month if you expect to get a reasonable level of technical support. There isn't that much profit in hosting.

Category: Account Secondary Category: Contract

Q. Should I worry that my host is a reseller?

A. Probably not. It is quite possible to get better support or prices from a reseller than from a base company. Our own resellers are all quality people hosting on the same server(s) as we use. OTOH resellers are usually smaller companies and since they don't own the server, sometimes they have to wait for the parent company to perform some tasks.

Category: Reseller

Q. Some hosts offer "unlimited bandwidth". Why don't you?

A. There is no such thing as "unlimited bandwidth". Someone has to pay for the traffic. If your network traffic exceeds a certain fixed amount, or a percentage of their server's capability, they will charge you more or ask you to leave their service (even if they told you it was unlimited). We provide a reasonable amount of bandwidth for a low price, and offer a clear upgrade path.

Q. What are doorway pages?

A. A doorway page is a page that is optimized to rank well on the search engines. Each search engine has it's own unique ranking algorithms (formulas used to determine the relevancy of a page to a given search term). Since every engine's algorithms differ, it is almost impossible to design one page that ranks well in all or even most of the search engines. This is why doorway pages can be useful. A doorway page can be any page on your site or ione you create specifically for this purpose. A doorway page has no special look to it. It is simply an alternate entrance to your site that has the right words in the right frequencies, positions, and tags. The design of the page is important. A well designed doorway page blends into the rest of your site seamlessly. It has relevant content targeted toward the key term. Each doorway page's content should vary somewhat with the key term. Ideally the doorway page is not just a fluff page but rather an informative, eye catching, relevant page that describes your product or service. In fact, if it is too obviously only there to attract a specific search engine, that engine might realize what it is and ban your site.

Q. What are Meta Tags?

A. These are lines that go in the "head" part of your site code. Meta tags for your "title", "description", and "keywords" should always be included, and will help search engines index your site appropriately.

Category: Site Secondary Category: Meta Tag

Q. What are mime types?

A. MIME Types help your web server to identify what type of file is being requested by a browser or other connection tool. For instance, when the web server gets a request from a browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, for a file that ends in .html, the web server knows that it is an html document because that extension is stored in the Mime Type list. If the web server gets a request from a browser for a file that ends in .gif, the web server knows that it is an image because that too is stored in the Mime Types. This applies to every file, image, application, etc. that may be requested by a web browser. If the file extension is not stored in the Mime Type list, the web server will not recognize it, will not be able to assist the browser, and that particular file type may not be viewable by the user. The MIME Types option in your Control Panel allows you to set certain programs to be used for specific extensions.

A. Those acronyms refer to various features such as programming languages, databases, etc. that are available with all our hosting plans.

Category: Software Secondary Category: Languages

Q. What are referral logs? Do you offer them?

A. Referral logs tell you the web site from which visitors reached your page. Using this information, you can tune your online advertising to maximize traffic to your site. We provide this information in the form of domain names of the referring pages making it easier to interpret and analyze. Check via one of the statistics programs available from your control panel.

Q. What are the advantages of shared web hosting?

A. Most businesses cannot justify the costs of having a dedicated server, dedicated Internet connections and all the hardware that goes with it. The initial outlay runs into several thousand dollars, and ongoing necessary maintenance costs are steep as well. Shared hosting (what we provide) allows you to share a server with many others, and still have a quick, responsive web site.

Q. What are the costs involved in switching my hosting to you?

A. We do not charge any transfer or setup fees.

Category: Hosting Secondary Category: Transfer    more

Q. What are the numbers listed under "space" and "transfer"?

A. Space is the amount of "stuff" you can put on your web site, including mail and other files. Available space is usually listed in megabytes (MB, millions of bytes). A single character of text takes requires one to four bytes. html files are usually rather small but pictures and programs can get quite large Your scripts, eMails and stats also take up space on your host. "Transfer" or "bandwidth" is how many bytes our server has moved to and from your site so far in the month.

Q. What browser should I develop my site for?

A. You should test to Firefox, Mozilla, Camino, or Safari. iCab, OmniWeb, and Opera should also be checked. Internet Explorer beyond version five is used by many people and you should check your site with it. However, you should never put in features that only work in one browser, as many people will not be able to see your site.

Category: Site Secondary Category: Development

Q. What browsers are supported by your software?

A. You should use Firefox, Mozilla, Camino, or Safari. iCab, OmniWeb, and Opera may also be good choices. Internet Explorer beyond version five will probably work on most sites but we do not recommend it as it fails to follow common standards and may break some sites.

Q. What does "Add-on Domain" mean?

A. "Add-on Domain" means secondary domain parked on one of your subdomains of your current account. This secondary domain shows the contents of the subdomain, but appears like an independent website to the outside world. Not all of our accounts allow this.

Q. What does a reseller do?

A. A reseller buys space/bandwidth in bulk and shares it among clients, essentially in competition with us.

Category: Reseller

Q. What does it cost to register a domain name?

A. That depends on the top level domain. If it is one of the common ones like .com or .net, under $10 at one of our domain registration subsidiaries. Country domains like .ca cost more, depending on the country.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Registration    more

Q. What file permissions do I need for my CGI script?

A. CGIs must be set with executable file permissions, or requests for the script from the web server will result in an Internal Server error. Scripts that need to be executable should have their permission set with chmod 755. This sets the file's permissions so that the file's owner may read, write, and execute the file; and anyone else can only read and execute it.

Q. What happens if I exceed my allocated bandwidth?

A. You will receive an automatic e-mail message warning you that you have reached 80% of your contracted limit. If it is more than 80%of the way through the month, do nothing. Otherwise decide if this is one-time (we will reset your account if it goes over) or ongoing, and if the latter, upgrade your account.

Q. What if I do not want to handle the technical support phone calls for the hosting accounts that I resell?

A. The reseller price is for resellers that plan on handling their own technical support. For those that choose not to take technical support tickets, we recommend you simply refer customers to us as an affiliate. We will give you a month's extension on your own hosting for every customer who signs up from your reference.

Q. What if my desired name is the same as a trademarked name?

A. Generally, if you've registered the name in good faith, if it's not a name belonging to an internationally known company, and you can show that you have a legitimate reason to use that name then you will likely to be able to keep that name. Of course if you try to register something like ibm or cpr, you will lose the name to its rightful owner without compensation. Too bad. You tried fraud and got caught.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Trademark

Q. What is .htaccess?

A. Among other things, this file can be used to restrict access to other files and web pages. When a request for a web page is made, the web server first checks for an .htaccess file. The server begins this check by looking for .htaccess in the root of the current web directory, and on down the directory tree until it reaches the directory where the requested file resides. Since the placement of the .htaccess file determines when it is executed, this fact can be used to restrict access only in certain subdirectories. The .htaccess file can be placed in one or more of your /home/$user/$domain-www subdirectories.

Category: Security Secondary Category: htaccess

Notes: Do not edit the .htaccess file if you are using MS FrontPage! FrontPage uses the .htaccess file, and editing it may cause errors in your configuration.

Q. What is a domain name?

A. A domain name tells people (and the computers they use) how to find your homepage on the Internet. Each domain name is assigned to a numerical IP address by your host provider. People remember names better than numbers, so the domain name, e.g.. www.yourname.com, is automatically translated by the registry into the numerical address of the actual server.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Registration

Q. What is a domain name?

A. A domain name is a two-part Web address unique to your specific website, for instance, YourBizName.com. While the first part is who you are, the second part, "com", stands for "commercial" and is the "top-level" domain in which your specific name is registered.

Q. What is a reseller web host?

A. A reseller operates components of a Web hosting operation using services, infrastructure and equipment provided by another hosting service. Usually they have a portion of a server rather then the whole machine. Some resellers operate full-fledged businesses using the hardware, software, network and logistical support of another Web hosting firm like us, while others simply operate as agents, offering discounts and providing low-level technical support.

Category: Reseller

Q. What is a Search Engine?

A. Search engines like Google and Yahoo, among many others, utilize indexing software agents often called robots or spiders. These agents are programmed to constantly "crawl" the Web in search of new or updated pages for sites they know about. They will essentially go from URL to URL until they have visited every Web site on the Internet. Search engines read a web site's 'meta tags' and content and check links from other sites in order to determine their ranking.

Q. What is a web host?

A. A web host is a business that provides the services needed for web sites to be viewed on the web and for eMail to be routed to a customer.

Category: Hosting

Q. What is a web server?

A. When someone enters your Web address (URL) in their Web browser, it looks up the location of the computer associated with that domain name. This 'host' computer or server then sends the files that make up that particular web page to the person's computer that requested it. Your server or host makes your website available to the world.

Category: Hosting

Q. What is an autoresponder?

A. Autoresponders are messages that are automatically sent to anyone who sends an eMail to a certain address. For instance, if you are going to be out of your office for a week, you may want to set up an autoresponder. If anyone contacts you via eMail, you would still receive their message in your POP3 account, but the sender would immediately receive a message back letting them know you are out of town and will contact them at a later date. Another reason for using an autoresponder would be to set up a marketing response to anyone interested in your company. If someone sends an eMail requesting information to Sales@YourDomain.com, you may have an autoresponder that immediately sends a reply to your customer thanking them for their inquiry, and letting them know that you will be in touch with them shortly.

Q. What is an eMail alias?

A. This is another name for eMail forwarding. Forwarding means that any eMail sent to a specified name on your account will be automatically redirected to a specified mail box.

Q. What is co-location?

A. Co-location (co-lo) is an advanced level of hosting service. The customer owns the server and leases space at the co-lo facility.

Category: Hosting Secondary Category: Colocation

Q. What is dedicated hosting?

A. A dedicated host has the service provider (data centre) set up a computer solely for that customer; it is not shared with other clients. A dedicated communications line or minimum bandwidth allotment may also be provided, subject to contract negotiation. Maintenance of this site is a subject of negotiation between the customer and the service provider. They may provide technical services, such as script writing, eMail maintenance or file backup. Generally, a contract is negotiated specifying the services you will receive and the fees involved. We can arrange dedicated hosting for a customer, but do not directly manage it ourselves. Expect to pay a few hundred dollars a month depending on the level of management you contract for and the hardware and software you want installed.

Q. What is DNS?

A. DNS stands for Domain Name Service. Each domain is assigned a unique numeric address and DNS servers takes care of locating and routing information to the domains so that the world can find you. If you already have a website or have found an site to host your website, you should use your host's DNS servers when registering your domain name. If you host with us, your nameservers are in the welcome message, and if you buy both the domain and the hosting from us, we will enter them for you.

Q. What is domain parking?

A. Parking allows you to use our DNS (domain name service) server to hold your domain name until you are ready to use it. If you do not have an ISP or are not planning to use your domain name yet, you can park your domain with us. Simply leave the DNS information unchanged from our defaults.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Parking

Q. What is domain propagation?

A. When a visitor types your domain name into their Web browser, their request is referred to a nameserver that indicates the physical location (the IP address) of your domain on the Internet. When your site location changes to a new IP address, or when a new domain name is added, nameservers around the world must be notified of the change. This process is referred to as propagation. Propagation normally requires 24-72 hours. During this period, if you are transferring your domain, some nameservers will refer to the old location of your site and some to the new location. Therefore, a visitor accessing your site may be directed to either the old or new location. It is usually best to keep your previous hosting account active until your transfer is verified as having taken place.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Propagation

Q. What is full-service web hosting?

A. Full-service can refer to a variety of services offered in addition to providing web space, transfer, and eMails for a web site. It could include support, web design services, or web site content maintenance services. We do not do design work or maintain the content on your site. Such services cost far more than hosting. You may have to spend from hundreds to thousands or more to get a custom site design.

Q. What is the difference between search engines and directories?

A. The main difference between a search engine and a general directory is that a directory will not list your URL if you do not first register it with them. They do not make use of indexing software agents and so have no way of knowing it's out there. As a result, their registration form will be considerably longer than just your URL. Directories are usually subdivided into categories and you have to submit your URL under the most appropriate heading.

Category: SearchEngine

Q. What is the different between a parked domain and an Add-on Domain?

A. A parked domain shows the contents of the site it is parked on (to). An add-on domain shows the contents of a subdomain, but as though it were an independent web site. The difference is what appears in users' browser bar.

Q. Why can't I register a domain that is already expired?

A. Domain names are held by the registrar for a period of time even after they have expired in case the original holder still wants to renew. This is a good thing if you forgot to renew because we can still get your domain back if you registered with us.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Expired

Q. Why do I need to register a domain name?

A. Most Internet providers do offer you a directory on their own domain that would look like this: www.providerdomain.com/~yourname. In addition to having to explain the little squiggle mark (~ which is called a tilde) to your less net savvy customers, this can prove cumbersome on business cards and letterheads, plus it does not reflect the unique nature of your business or homepage. Moreover, it all has to be changed if you switch to another host, which is very awkward and expensive.

Category: Domains Secondary Category: Registration

Q. Why do you ask payment for a whole year/six months/three months on some accounts?

A. It's cheaper and easier for us, and you therefore pay less. Monthly payments cost us both more in credit card processing fees. We do offer a monthly option for the low cost accounts, but we have to charge a little more to cover the extra costs to us.

Category: Account Secondary Category: Contract

Q. Why do you offer more than one domain registration service?

A. The domain selections available from our registration companies are not the same, and neither are the services. You have to decide whether you want good domain tools (say, for one domain) at a rock bottom price, or high-class tools (for a domain portfolio) for a little more.

Q. Why don't you guarantee 100% uptime?

A. No host can provide 100% uptime. Even the biggest and best multi-million dollar sites go down from time to time due to various unforeseen circumstances. The best you can find is an uptime guarantee, where the host offers refunds or plan extensions for downtime.†That's what we do.

A. We're a small company, and have other enterprises, as well as other interests. We can answer support requests within 24 hours except on Sundays. A. No, your site will not be down, not even for one second, if you are careful. You upload your site to our servers and create all the necessary files and folders first. Then you change the nameservers at your registrar. As the new information propagates over 72 hours, some people will be viewing your site with the previous hosting company, and some will be viewing your site on the new server. However, after about 72 hours, most everyone in the world will have access to your site on our server and you will have switched over, not missing a minute of uptime. You may end up having to read your eMail at two different locations for a brief time, but you shouldn't lose any.

Q. Won't my website be slow if I don't have a dedicated server and connections?

A. Not if you choose the right web hosting provider. A serious web hosting provider will not allow websites that hog bandwidth to share with other websites. We ensure that our web hosting service is fast, reliable and comes with responsive support.
