Results for Scripts:

Q. Am I allowed to install a script that sends mail?

A. You are, but it cannot send mail as "nobody"; it must send as your username. It also cannot use the mail port directly, but must go through Sendmail. You are also responsible if someone hacks your site and sends out mail with it. Moreover, we monitor the installation of such scripts and all mass mailings from the box.

Q. Am I allowed to install scripts other than those you have available with your installers.

A. You are, but they are your responsibility.

Notes: We do not allow game servers or chat rooms.

Q. Can I run my own software on my site?

A. All plans allow running scripts in languages such as Perl or PHP. You can also run "cron" jobs which enable you to automatically execute programs or scripts at a specific time and date.

Q. Can I set up a bulletin board on my site?

A. You install bulletin boards through your control panel script installer or via Fantastico. You may also buy your own license to a commercial product, though you should check for compatibility first.

Q. Do you offer any ready to run cgi-scripts?

A. Yes, we offer several ready to run scripts with our hosting plans. These scripts include FormMail, Counters, Guestbook, and many others. Some are installed by cPanel, others by Fantastico. However, we only support the installation process, and customers have to take responsibility for suitability and for upgrades. Moreover, if we upgrade our software and this breaks a script you installed, you'll need to contact the script's maker, not us.

Q. Do you support Microsoft ASP scripts?

A. We do not support Microsoft ASP scripts on our servers. However, we do support scripts written in PHP. PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is well suited for Web development and can be simply embedded into html. It is open source software, and works well with MySQL, a high-quality DBMS for small to mid-sized databases. PHP offers advantages that add value to our clients' websites without the higher development costs of ASP, while supporting our concern for performance, server security, the security of our other customers and the security of your own site.

Q. If I have a choice between installing a script through cPanel and the same one by Fantastico, which one should I use?

A. Use the Fantastico installer. Script installation is a very minor sideline with the cPanel folks and they are often slow with updates. It is Netenberg's main business, and they keep their scripts updated.
